All Better

I have good news on that taboo subject...

Hip, hip, hooray! Last week (wk 4) is when nursing started becoming less painful. A lot of healing has happened and my sister, Shana, helped by making me sit back and relax. Julia will be 6 weeks tomorrow and we are now enjoying this special time together.

However, Julia feeds for a long time!
A typical day looks like this:
7am-1pm constant feeding (not even a five minute break)
1pm-4pm nap
4pm-10pm constant feeding
10pm-3am sleep
3am-5am feeding
5am-7am sleep

I find myself spending all morning and all evening on the couch nursing. The only time I get up is during her afternoon nap. So I found this terrific baby carrier that I can move in and she can nurse. Yesterday we purchased it and today I have been doing some housework and loving it! 5 weeks on the couch was too much for me. I still love to sit and nurse to connect, but it is nice to have some freedom back. Breastfeeding has taken a lot of dedication from me, I stuck with it and now I am so glad I did.

Spring Blizzard of 2009

She spent all morning begging to go out and have a snowball fight.

We were able to talk Julia into making snow angels for us.

Breastfeeding 101

There are many things I learned AFTER I started breastfeeding, that would have been helpful to know before I started. Maybe that is my fault, thinking it would come more naturally and not reading a lot of breastfeeding books. However, I have learned the most from my lactation consultant and post this on the world wide web for anyone that can benefit from this info...

1. Watch the babies hands, they're trying to talk to you. Tight fists and shoulders means they're hungry. As they are eating, you will see their tiny hands slowly relax and by the end, their fingers are straight and their arms are limp.

2. Ameda Gel Nursing Pads are the worst thing ever invented. They do help hold in moisture... and bacteria! I strongly feel that these pads lead to our yeast/thrush problem. They hand these pads out at the hospital and encourage the use of them. I would steer clear!!!

3. Request that a lactation specialist be there for the very first latch. This can help avoid damage and pain!

4. The Honeysuckle pillow is the best thing I have discovered. It is firm and shaped perfectly to hold the baby in the right position for nursing.

One Month Old

Julia is one month old!

She loves her swing that Oma Doris and Uncle Scott Logan bought for her. (pictured on the left)

She is getting used to cold wipes during diaper changes.

She has mastered breastfeeding.

She has outgrown most of her newborn clothes.

She has been to the dog park, stores, restaurants, on walks, friend's houses, the airport, the doctors, and a few other places.

She likes getting bathes.

Her hair is getting thicker.

Her nails need clipped almost once a week.

She only cries if she is hungry.

She sleeps through the night, waking up to eat once, maybe twice. She had this schedule from the beginning.

A few times a day, she signs the "I love you" sign on her tiny little hands and it gives mommy butterflies in her tummy each time.

Girls Day Out!
Aunt Shana is visiting and we went downtown on St. Patrick's Day to do shopping at the 16th Street Mall. We shopped until the stroller was full and had a yummy lunch. It was a sunny, warm day and we had a great time!

I find myself spending hours staring at her precious face. Especially when she is sleeping. I wish the camera better captured the peace on her face as she dreams.

First Bath

I've had this video for a few weeks now, but could not find the cord to download it to my computer. I finally found the cord this morning and I think you'll enjoy this funny clip!

Nursing and our Little Blueberry

I wasn't sure if I should talk about breastfeeding on my blog site... I feel that in our culture, we aren't suppose to talk about it, especially to men. Though nursing seems to be all I've done since the baby has arrived. It has consumed me, physically and emotionally. It has been beautiful, rewarding, painful, stressful and did I say painful!?!? I thought it would come more naturally. One problem is that I have never seen anyone breastfeed. Isn't that sad? It is a little like ballroom dancing, you have to see someone do it, to get an idea of where your right hand goes, where her hips go, where her bottom hand goes, where your left arm goes, where her chin goes, where her feet go, etc. With the help of an expensive Board Certified Lactation Consultant, the positioning is coming along. Correct positioning has helped with the pain some. However, the thrush problem was so excruciating, I would have rather given birth each day in the last three weeks, then go through this pain! Seriously.

Since Julia has started treatment for thrush, which is an extract from the violet flower, things have gotten better by the day. Best of all, it temporally stains her mouth and lips a purple shade and she has gained a nickname: Our Little Blueberry

Snow Angel

This snow angel is ready for the Colorado weather! This day she took her puppy, Wasabi, to the dog park. Her snowsuit is still a little big, but it keeps her warm and toasty!
